Sightseeing in and around Shanghai

 

The Bund

 

When you visit Shanghai you will want to see the Bund area. It is the old colonial downtown centre of Shanghai. From the riverside promenade you can walk along the Huangpu River and see one of the most spectacular city vistas in the world. Standing on the edge of the river and looking out over the city, you can see the amazing architecture and vastness of the new Pudong financial district highlighted by the Oriental Pearl tower across the river.

A river cruise is and enchanting and unique way to see the Bund and Pudong Districts.  Here you can see both sides of the river, the electric sunsets, the bustling city, the many boats and the glorious lights which are especially amazing at night.

 

Nanjing Road pedestrian shopping mall

 

This outside shopping mall is China’s busiest and most famous shopping district. Here the old is mixed with the new and locals and foreign visitors alike marvel at the lights, the people and the unquestionable dazzle of the whole experience.

 

Yuyuan Gardens

 

The Yuyuan Gardens are a classic creation left over from the Ming Dynasty. Go back 400 years in time and imagine how people once lived. Take a stroll through the beautiful gardens with their bright colored flowers. See the old pagoda style roofs as you walk along the beautiful canals and over the ancient bridges.

 

Water towns

 

Explore one of the many incredible water towns that lie only a short distance from Shanghai. One of the more notable ones is Su Zhou, founded in 600 B.C. It is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze basin known as the Venice of the East. Su Zhou was once described by Marco Polo as the most beautiful city in the world. It became famous when the imperial family moved there in the twelfth century. It is now one of the leading tourist attractions in China.

The Shanghai Museum of Ancient Chinese Art

 

With an area of over 12,000 sq. meters, this architectural wonder houses a collection of more than 120,000 precious Chinese artifacts spanning over 6000 years. Included are galleries of bronze, ceramics, sculptures, calligraphy, paintings, carvings, furniture, currencies, etc.

 

The Leisurely Streets of Shanghai

 

The traditional market places of old Shanghai are still there for you to see and enjoy. Visit the old town, the alleyways, the harbor, and the relics of days gone by, the temples, the canals and even the bars. After you have visited those areas it is on to the trendy part of new Shanghai that fills visitors with excitement. Stroll along the streets of Shanghai and see the people, absorb the culture, sample the many different cuisines. Visit one of the many fashion districts. Did you know that Shanghai is now the world's sixth largest fashion capital after Paris, Milan, London, New York and Tokyo?
